Members of the Greater Baton Chapter were well represented at the recent ASSE professional development conference in Las Vegas last month. The chapter had nearly 50 members who attended the conference..
Presenters included chapter members Glenn Young, CSP, David Langlois, CSP, and Steve Pereira, CSP. Chapter proxy Delegate, Lance Roux attended the annual House of Delegates meeting where several changes to Society by-laws were voted on. Chapter member Selena Schmidt, co-chair of the Young Leaders in Safety, led the Society’s newest practice specialty meeting. Exhibitors included Lu Yuan and Laurence Mauerman of the ASSE Student Section at SLU in Hammond.
Several awards were presented to chapter members. The Society presented Past President Ronnie Meyers, CSP, with the Chapter Stars Award for his leadership efforts during the 06-07 term. Paul Amedee accepted the award on behalf of Ronnie who was in Australia on business. The Greater Baton Rouge chapter was one of only three chapters in Region IV to achieve Stars status.
Michael Parker, CSP, was presented with the Safety Professional of the Year Award sponsored by the Management Practice Specialty. Michael is also a past President of our chapter and currently serves as Governmental Affairs Chairman and member of the Management Practice Specialty Advisory Committee.
Brett Beoubay, CSP, was elected the Louisiana Area Director for the remainder of the 2008 term. Brett will carry out the duties of working with the state’s six chapters to foster cooperative efforts in improving our region’s presence.
Members elected a new board at May’s membership meeting. New Officers include:
The E-Board also selected Linda Welch to chair the Programs committee which is responsible for the important task of coordinating meeting venues and speakers. If you or your company is interested in sponsoring or speaking at a membership meeting, please contact Linda.
Other new chairpersons include Steven Stogner, Community Involvement and, Doris Smith, Communication & Public Relations. Several committee positions are available. If you are interested in serving on a committee, please contact any Board member.
We had another record turnout during the chapter’s annual golf tournament this year. Over 110 players turned out to enjoy a beautiful day of golf, food, and social networking. Special thanks to all of this year’s sponsors and members who helped make this tournament a financial success.
Proceeds from the tournament will help fund programs such as the student scholarship, ASSE Foundation, community service events, as well as help offset the costs of general membership meetings. The committee is already working on planning next year’s tournament and is seeking sponsors and volunteers to help out. Please contact Linda Welch is you are interested.

Under advisement of the Society Risk Management department, The Greater Baton Rouge Chapter ASSE has begun the process of incorporation. Incorporation is necessary in today's world in order to protect not only the financial interests of each individual chapter, but the personal finances of each individual Society member. Without incorporation, everyone's finances can be at risk if the chapter is ever involved in a legal dispute. This action is included in the Society's Strategic Plan as strategy 6.3.7. For more information, please visit www.asse.org.
The SLU ASSE Student Section now has T-shirts available bearing the school's logo and colors. The students are asking for a $15 donation for the T-shirt to help fund their trip to this year's Region IV PDC in Atlanta. Please contact Lance Roux at lanceroux@rouxsafety.com to place your order today and help support our future HSE leaders.
